In 1990, the first group of Medical students (M.D.) was accepted to Kurdistan Health Organization and the pioneering graduates started the practice of medicine here. In 1992 and following the approving Kurdistan University of Medical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine officially started training medical students. Now, it has 20 Departments (including basic and clinical sciences). Faculty of Medicine has 145 full-time faculty members and three affiliated hospitals. The Faculty trains around 1000 students in different postgraduate and medical programs. It has comprehensive programs on clinical sciences covering M.D., Residency (Specialty & Sub-specialty). It offers versatile graduate degrees (M.Sc. & Ph.D.) in basic sciences as well and well known and experienced faculty members in both clinical and research mentoring.
Policy Statements
Kurdistan University of Medical Sciences has attempted to recruit medical education professionals to achieve general medicine curriculum goals and enhance educational programs management. Medical education experts participate in all educational councils and committees of the medical school and teaching hospitals. They officially work in EDC departments, either.
The following attempts have been done to achieve the abovementioned goals:
1. Inviting medical education professionals to educational councils and committees
2. Recruiting medical education professionals in teaching hospitals
3. Holding workshops on teaching methodology, assessment, professionalism, and education management for the purpose of empowering faculty members
4. Empowering faculty members for international education and research programs as well as obtaining national and international ranks
5. Exam assessment and curriculum development
6. Planning talented students empowering programs for scientific Olympiads
7. Designing and conducting applied research to tackle educational challenges
8. Teaching medical education in post-graduate level and short courses
9. Encouraging young faculty members to study / take medical education courses
10. Collaborating with Virtual University of Medical Sciences
11. Collaborating with other universities of medical sciences in promoting medical education
12. Collaborating with the Ministry of Health and Medical Education
